Freshman Information Literacy : Partner MiniProject

Essential Question: Why is it important to gather information from a range of viewpoints when researching civic and social issues?

Your Task

You will be working in pairs to research one of the following topics:

  1. Is Feminism necessary in the 21st century?
  2. Is Torture ever justified?
  3. Is Gun Control needed in the United States?
  4. Should minors have to seek Parental Consent for an Abortion?
  5. Should Social Media companies be held responsible for the spread of misinformation?

Part I

A BACKGROUND article (an unbiased or reference article that explains how this question came to be an issue) will be provided for you.

Read the article quickly. Highlight main ideas and make notes.

Part II

Next, you will complete the first side of the Questioning and Strategizing organizer. Engage in the Question Formulation Technique with your partner. Follow the rules!

Part III

Next, you will each read 1 article from Opposing Viewpoints. Be sure the source is relevant to both your research question and the required position (pro or con).

  • a PRO article
  • a CON article

Read your article individually. Highlight important arguments and make notes (P,C,Q).

Part III

Fill out side two of the Questioning & Strategizing organizer to begin to synthesize the information you have found.

You will address the class. Be prepared to explain:

  • the three priority questions and which might be the essential question
  • the strongest arguments you discovered (both pro and con) and why you feel they are strong arguments
  • which position you would argue if this were your topic for the CCA (you and your partner do not have to agree) and what other information you would need to make an effective argument
