Summer Reading Book

Assignment

In addition to reading The Poisonwood Bible in its entirety, please read the following chapters in How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster (ISBN 978-0-06-230167-3). Students with the last name A-L should read the first four chapters and M-Z should read the second four. All students are required to read "Every Trip is a Quest (Except When It's Not).

Students should come to class prepared to write and prepared to discuss the Foster chapters in conjunction with the novel. Notes are not necessary, but can certainly be helpful.

If your last name begins with A-L:
"Nice to Eat with You: Acts of Communion"
"It's More Than Just Rain or Snow"
"Is That a Symbol?"
"...More Than It's Gonna Hurt You: Concerning Violence"
"Every Trip is a Quest (Except When It's Not)"

If your last name begins with M-Z:
"Yes, She's a Christ Figure, Too"
"If She Comes Up, It's Baptism"
"...So Does Season"
"It's Never Just Heart Disease...And Rarely Just Illness"
"Every Trip is a Quest (Except When It's Not)"
